Summary

Rodent whisker maps are imprecise at birth. For the first 2-3 days, whiskers compete for cortical space, leading to a refined functional map that aligns with anatomical barrel formation.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Developmental Neuroscience
  • Sensory Systems

Background:

  • The rodent somatosensory cortex has a topographic map for facial whiskers.
  • The precise timing and initial accuracy of this functional whisker map before anatomical barrel formation are unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the developmental timeline of the functional whisker map in the barrel cortex.
  • To determine the precision of the whisker protomap at birth and its maturation process.

Main Methods:

  • In vivo extracellular and whole-cell recordings were performed on rat pups aged 0-7 days.
  • Neuronal responses and projection fields (PFs) to whisker stimulation were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • At birth (P0-1), neurons showed broad tuning to multiple whiskers, with overlapping PFs.
  • A segregated whisker map with preferential single whisker tuning emerged by postnatal days 2-3.
  • This functional map refinement coincided with anatomical barrel development.

Conclusions:

  • The functional whisker protomap is imprecise at birth.
  • Whiskers compete for cortical representation during the initial postnatal days.
  • Functional map segregation parallels anatomical barrel formation in the somatosensory cortex.
