Summary

Pediatric epidermoid cysts are rare oral cavity lesions. This case highlights a successful surgical removal of a floor of mouth epidermoid cyst in an 8-year-old, with no recurrence at 18 months.

Background:

  • Epidermoid cysts in the pediatric oral cavity are uncommon, particularly in children under 10.
  • These cysts typically present in the midline of the mouth.
  • They arise from residual ectodermal tissue of the first and second branchial arches, formed during early fetal development.

Observation:

  • A case study involving an 8-year-old male with a floor of mouth swelling and dysphagia.
  • Initial ultrasonography suggested an infected ranula, with differential diagnoses including foregut duplication cyst and dermoid cyst.
  • The lesion was surgically excised.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination confirmed the cyst to be an epidermoid cyst.
  • Post-operative follow-up at 18 months showed no signs of cyst recurrence.
