Groups initially outperform individuals in stable decision tasks. However, when the environment unexpectedly changes, group decision-making adaptation is delayed, performing similarly to individuals, despite appearing to have better memory.
Area of Science:
- Cognitive Psychology
- Behavioral Economics
- Decision Sciences
Background:
- Extensive research compares group vs. individual decision-making on static tasks.
- Limited understanding exists on how groups and individuals adapt to changing decision environments.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate group and individual performance in dynamic decision-making environments.
- To analyze adaptation to unexpected changes in underlying probabilities.
Main Methods:
- Experimental design involving decisions from experience.
- Introduction of unexpected changes in decision environment probabilities after initial trials.
- Comparison of group performance against individual performance and Bayesian updating benchmark.
Main Results:
- Groups outperformed individuals in stable decision environments.
- Group superiority vanished after environmental changes.
- Group performance more closely approximated Bayesian updating, suggesting better memory initially.
- Groups exhibited delayed adaptation to environmental shifts.
Conclusions:
- Group decision-making does not inherently hinder adaptation to environmental change.
- Observed delayed adaptation in groups stems from coordinated responses, mimicking enhanced memory.
- Findings challenge assumptions about group routines impeding dynamic adjustments.
