Summary

Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) injections can be difficult. An adjusted oblique view technique improved the success rate of SIJ injections when the conventional method failed.

Background:

  • Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) injections are a common procedure for managing lower back pain.
  • Conventional fluoroscopic techniques for SIJ injection can present challenges, potentially leading to lower success rates.
  • Difficulties in achieving joint entry may necessitate alternative approaches.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe an adjusted fluoroscopic technique for sacroiliac joint injections.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of this adjusted technique in improving procedural success rates.

Main Methods:

  • A conventional technique using superimposition of posterior and anterior SIJ lines was initially employed.
  • When conventional technique failed, fluoroscopy was adjusted to obtain an oblique view for joint entry.
  • The study involved 50 sacroiliac joint injections.

Main Results:

  • The conventional technique was successful in 29 out of 50 (58%) injections.
  • The adjusted oblique view technique subsequently enabled successful completion of 18 out of 21 (85.7%) previously unsuccessful procedures.
