    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology and Hepatology
    • Surgical Pathology
    • Oncology

    Context:

    • Histological analysis of 1553 gallbladder biopsies post-surgery.
    • Correlation of findings with patient demographics.
    • Focus on gallbladder disease and associated malignancies.

    Purpose:

    • To review histological findings in gallbladder disease biopsies.
    • To correlate these findings with patient demographic characteristics.
    • To assess the prevalence and characteristics of gallbladder cancer.

    Summary:

    • Gallbladder cancer detected in 6.1% of cases.
    • Female predominance observed across all groups, notably in Mapuche patients (11:1 ratio).
    • Many neoplastic lesions (52%) were not macroscopically apparent; early-stage and poorly differentiated tumors were common.

    Impact:

    • Highlights the importance of histological examination for detecting occult gallbladder cancer.
    • Identifies demographic factors, such as female gender and Mapuche ethnicity, associated with gallbladder disease.
    • Underscores the liver as the most common site of gallbladder cancer invasion.
