Summary

Bonding orthodontic brackets without primer is clinically non-inferior to using primer, with no significant difference in bond-up times. However, bond failure is more likely without primer.

Area of Science:

  • Orthodontics
  • Dental Materials Science

Background:

  • Direct bonding of orthodontic brackets is a standard procedure.
  • The use of primer in direct bonding aims to enhance adhesion.
  • Evaluating clinical performance without primer is crucial for procedural simplification.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the clinical performance of APC™II Victory Series™ brackets in direct orthodontic bonding.
  • To compare bonding efficacy with and without the use of primer.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, non-inferiority randomized controlled clinical trial involving 92 patients.
  • Brackets were bonded either with or without primer.
  • Outcomes measured included bracket failures, bond-up time, and Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) over 12 months.

Main Results:

  • Bracket failure rates were 11.1% with primer and 15.8% without primer (non-inferior, P=0.08).
  • No statistically significant difference in bond-up time was observed (P=0.402).
  • A significant difference in ARI was found, with more enamel bonding without primer (76.5% vs 49.4%, P<0.0001).

Conclusions:

  • Bonding APC™II Victory Series™ brackets without primer is statistically non-inferior to using primer.
  • No significant difference in bond-up times was found.
  • Bond failure is more likely at the composite-enamel interface when primer is omitted.
