Summary

This case report details osseous metaplasia, or bone formation, within a breast abscess. This rare finding resolved after surgical excision of the abscess.

Background:

  • Breast abscesses are typically treated with antibiotics and drainage.
  • Persistent or recurrent breast abscesses may require surgical intervention.
  • Osseous metaplasia is the formation of bone in non-skeletal tissues.

Observation:

  • An 87-year-old woman presented with a persistent, painful right breast lump initially diagnosed as an abscess.
  • Standard treatments including antibiotics and aspiration failed to resolve the lesion.
  • Surgical excision was performed due to the refractory nature of the breast abscess.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination of the excised breast abscess revealed the presence of osseous metaplasia.
  • This represents the formation of bone tissue within the abscess cavity.
