Operant Conditioning Intervention

Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.

Background:

Behavioral dentistry is crucial for quality pediatric dental care.
Effective behavioral strategies are essential for children's dental treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare anxiety levels in preschool children during dental treatment.
To evaluate anxiety associated with rotary instruments versus chemomechanical caries removal.

Main Methods:

Sixty preschool children with carious lesions were studied.
Caries removal was performed using rotary instruments on one side and Papacarie on the contralateral side.
Anxiety was measured using the Modified Child Dental Anxiety Scale.

Main Results:

Children exhibited more relaxed behavior with the Papacarie method.
Papacarie chemomechanical caries removal resulted in lower anxiety scores compared to rotary instruments.

Conclusions:

The Papacarie method is a less anxiety-provoking alternative for pediatric caries removal.
This approach facilitates a non-threatening introduction to dental settings for children.
