Summary

This study evaluated neuroblastoma (NBL) outcomes in young children treated with national protocols. High survival rates were observed, suggesting unique infant neuroblastoma biology, even in MYCN-amplified cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the treatment outcomes for neuroblastoma (NBL) in children under 18 months of age.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of national protocols in this age group.
  • To identify prognostic factors influencing survival.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective evaluation of 27 children diagnosed with NBL under 18 months.
  • Analysis of treatment characteristics and outcomes.
  • Assessment of event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS).

Main Results:

  • Event-free survival (EFS) at 108 months was 72.6% ± 7.7%.
  • Overall survival (OS) at 108 months was 91.7% ± 8%.
  • Treatment response was the only significant predictor of OS (p=0.001); MYCN-amplified tumors showed high survival.

Conclusions:

  • Infant neuroblastoma outcomes in this cohort were comparable to previous studies.
  • Standard prognostic factors had limited impact, possibly due to study design and sample size.
  • High survival in infants with MYCN-amplified tumors suggests distinct biological characteristics.
