Road traffic accidents are a growing concern, with this study analyzing trauma cases in a rural Indian institution. Findings highlight the need for targeted interventions and preventive measures to improve trauma victim care and outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Trauma epidemiology
- Road traffic accident analysis
- Surgical trauma care
Background:
- Increasing incidence of road traffic accidents over two decades.
- Need to understand trauma epidemiology for improved victim care.
- Limited data on trauma trends in rural Indian healthcare settings.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the epidemiology and trends of trauma cases.
- To evaluate the presentation and management of trauma victims.
- To recommend preventive strategies for road traffic accidents.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective and prospective study design.
- Analysis of 986 surgical trauma cases from 2001-2003.
- Data collection from Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS), Sewagram.
Main Results:
- Accidents constituted the majority of trauma admissions in this rural area.
- Surgical interventions included wound repair (78.8%), exploratory laparotomy (3.8%), and orthopedic procedures (16.3%).
- Overall mortality rate was 2.9%, with good general ward care noted.
Conclusions:
- Rural trauma care demonstrated effectiveness in general ward settings.
- Further assessment of cost-effectiveness for specialized trauma centers is warranted.
- Findings underscore the importance of addressing road traffic accident epidemiology in rural India.
