Abstract:
The aetiology of ankylosing spondylitis involves some genetic predisposition: the disease occurs mainly in males, and many spondylitics have the HLA-827 antigen. However, the correlation with known genetic factors is not absolute. For example, not all identical twin siblings of spondylitics develop the disease. In this review Andrew Keat discusses the genetic and environmental factors which may contribute to the development of spondylitis.
