Summary

This study reviews antiglobulin rosette tests for detecting lymphocyte immunoglobulin (Ig) and Ig-related determinants. These methods, including MARR and DARR, offer advantages over direct binding techniques for identifying surface molecules.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Cell Biology

Background:

  • B lymphocytes utilize surface immunoglobulin (Ig) as antigen receptors.
  • The nature of T lymphocyte antigen receptors is debated, but they show reactivity with anti-Ig reagents, suggesting an Ig-related structure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and compare antiglobulin rosette tests, specifically the mixed antiglobulin rosetting reaction (MARR) and direct antiglobulin rosetting reaction (DARR).
  • To evaluate these methods for demonstrating lymphocyte Ig and Ig-related surface determinants.
  • To compare rosetting techniques with conventional direct binding methods.

Main Methods:

  • Review of antiglobulin rosette tests (MARR and DARR).
  • Comparison with direct binding methodology using free anti-Ig molecules.

Main Results:

  • Antiglobulin rosette tests, particularly MARR and DARR, are highlighted for their utility in detecting lymphocyte surface determinants.
  • These rosetting techniques offer special merit compared to conventional direct binding assays.

Conclusions:

  • Antiglobulin rosette assays provide valuable methods for the demonstration of lymphocyte immunoglobulin and related surface molecules.
  • MARR and DARR are effective alternatives to direct binding for characterizing lymphocyte surface antigens.
