Eukaryotic DNA can be altered by exogenous agents and through spontaneous intracellular processes. Proficiency in the repair of DNA is required for the maintenance of normal health and there is evidence that defective repair is associated with immunodeficiency states and perhaps with ageing changes in the immune system.
