Background:

Healthcare workers are at risk of occupational exposure to hepatitis B virus (HBV).
Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is critical for preventing HBV infection after exposure.
Adherence to PEP regimens is essential for effective protection.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the completion rates of a hepatitis B protection program following occupational exposure.
To identify barriers to completing the post-exposure prophylaxis regimen.
To recommend improvements for future HBV protection programs.

Main Methods:

A cohort of 51 individuals who received hepatitis B passive/active prophylaxis post-exposure was evaluated.
Completion of the entire PEP regimen was tracked.
Analysis focused on adherence rates and potential factors influencing completion.

Main Results:

Only 28% of the 51 individuals completed the full hepatitis B post-exposure prophylaxis regimen.
A significant proportion of healthcare workers did not adhere to the prescribed prophylaxis schedule.
This highlights a gap in the current protective measures.

Conclusions:

Current hepatitis B post-exposure prophylaxis programs show low completion rates.
There is a need to intensify pre-exposure vaccination programs for healthcare staff.
Implementing reminder systems for both pre- and post-exposure HBV protection is recommended to improve adherence and outcomes.
