    Summary

We developed LOGISMOS-B, a new method for accurately measuring cortical thickness (CT). This brain imaging technique outperforms FreeSurfer, offering more reliable results for neurological and psychiatric research.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroimaging
    • Computational anatomy
    • Brain morphometry

    Background:

    • Cortical thickness (CT) is a critical metric in neuroscience, influencing psychiatric and neurologic research.
    • Accurate and robust CT measurement is essential for understanding brain structure and function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To introduce LOGISMOS-B, a novel automated method for precise cortical thickness computation.
    • To evaluate LOGISMOS-B's accuracy and reliability against existing methods like FreeSurfer.

    Main Methods:

    • LOGISMOS-B utilizes Layered Optimal Graph Image Segmentation of Multiple Objects and Surfaces for the Brain.
    • The method combines LOGISMOS graph segmentation with generalized gradient vector flows for surface segmentation.
    • Validation was performed on two datasets comprising 83 subjects.

    Main Results:

    • LOGISMOS-B demonstrated superior accuracy and reliability compared to the FreeSurfer (FS) method.
    • The technique accurately identified known cortical thickness patterns in healthy and MS patient brains.
    • Surface distance measurements showed higher accuracy for LOGISMOS-B (WM: 0.018 ± 0.498mm) compared to FS (WM: 0.263 ± 0.452mm).

    Conclusions:

    • LOGISMOS-B offers a more accurate and robust approach to cortical thickness measurement.
    • The method shows strong correlations with age and identifies plausible cortical thinning patterns.
    • LOGISMOS-B is a valuable tool for neuroimaging research, particularly in psychiatric and neurologic studies.
