Background:

Cystoid macular edema (CME) is a common complication of central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO).
Intravitreal corticosteroids, such as triamcinolone acetonide, are used to manage CME.
Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is a leading cause of sudden vision loss in adults.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe a case of sudden vision loss following intravitreal triamcinolone for CRVO-related CME.
To investigate the potential link between intravitreal triamcinolone and the development of NAION.

Main Methods:

Retrospective case report.

Main Results:

A patient developed sudden vision loss after receiving intravitreal triamcinolone for CRVO-induced CME.
The patient subsequently developed signs consistent with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).

Conclusions:

The exact cause of NAION remains unclear.
While a direct causal link cannot be established, intravitreal triamcinolone may be a contributing factor to NAION development in susceptible individuals.
