Parafoveolar intraretinal crystals in pearson syndrome

Purpose:
To describe the occurrence of bilateral parafoveolar intraretinal crystals in a patient with Pearson syndrome (bone marrow-pancreas syndrome).
Methods:
A patient with an established diagnosis of Pearson syndrome underwent complete ophthalmic examination and optical coherence tomography.
Results:
Fine, refractile, crystalline, parafoveolar intraretinal deposits were seen bilaterally. There was no evidence of pigmentary retinopathy or ophthalmoplegia.
Conclusions:
Intraretinal crystals in the macula may be seen in Pearson syndrome and may not cause a substantial decrease in visual acuity. Pearson syndrome should be considered in the differential diagnosis of parafoveolar crystalline retinopathy.
