This study synthesized selenite-substituted hydroxyapatite (Se-HA) for bone repair. Se-HA with a Se/P ratio of 0.1 shows thermal stability, indicating potential for bone scaffold fabrication.
Area of Science:
- Biomaterials Science
- Materials Chemistry
- Nanotechnology
Background:
- Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a key material for bone regeneration.
- Incorporating trace elements can enhance HA properties.
- Selenium's biological roles suggest potential benefits in biomaterials.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize selenite-substituted hydroxyapatite (Se-HA) using a co-precipitation method.
- To investigate the effect of selenite substitution on HA's structural and thermal properties.
- To evaluate the potential of Se-HA for bone repair scaffold applications.
Main Methods:
- Co-precipitation method using sodium selenite as the selenium source.
- Characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
- Assessment of thermal stability through sintering tests.
Main Results:
- Selenite successfully substituted phosphate groups in the hydroxyapatite lattice.
- Substitution altered lattice parameters and reduced crystallite size and crystallinity.
- Nano-crystalline Se-HA was obtained for Se/P ratios up to 0.1.
- Se-HA with Se/P ratio of 0.1 exhibited thermal stability at 900 °C for 2 hours.
Conclusions:
- Selenite substitution modifies hydroxyapatite structure and properties.
- Se-HA with a Se/P ratio of 0.1 demonstrates promising thermal stability.
- Se-HA holds significant potential for developing advanced bone repair scaffolds.
