Psychosurgery

2.4K
Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.

Kidney Transplant II: Surgical Procedure

880
Preoperative ManagementThe primary goals of preoperative management in kidney transplantation are to optimize the patient’s metabolic state and prepare them for surgery through diet adjustments, necessary dialysis, and tailored medical treatment. This phase also involves comprehensive infection screening and patient education about the surgical procedure and postoperative care to improve outcomes and adherence.Medical ManagementA comprehensive evaluation is required for both the living...

Cardiomyopathy VII: Pre and Post Operative Nursing Management

442
Patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction who remain symptomatic despite optimal medical therapy may undergo a septal myectomy (Morrow procedure). This procedure involves excising a portion of the hypertrophied septum below the aortic valve using a heart-lung machine to improve blood flow through the LVOT. Effective preoperative and postoperative nursing management ensures successful patient outcomes, minimizes complications, and...

Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

1.2K
Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.
Sigmoidoscopy
Sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a flexible sigmoidoscope equipped with a light source and camera to examine the rectum and sigmoid colon. The procedure involves inserting the tube through the anus...

Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

690
Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Psychology
  • Surgical Patient Care
  • Child Development

Background:

  • Preoperative anxiety and non-compliance are significant challenges in pediatric surgery.
  • Current interventions for managing anxiety and promoting cooperation vary in effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of psychological accompaniment and game activities in reducing preoperative anxiety and enhancing compliance in pediatric surgical patients.
  • To compare the effectiveness of contextualized games versus general distracting activities when combined with psychological support.

Main Methods:

  • A total of 104 pediatric patients undergoing surgery were allocated into four groups: (1) contextual games with psychological accompaniment, (2) contextual games only, (3) distracting activities only, and (4) psychological accompaniment only.
  • Anxiety levels were measured using the modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale.
  • Compliance was assessed using a modified Induction Compliance Checklist.

Main Results:

  • The group receiving both contextual games and psychological accompaniment exhibited the lowest anxiety levels and highest cooperation rates.
  • Contextual games alone were more effective than psychological accompaniment alone.
  • Distracting activities alone proved to be the least effective intervention.

Conclusions:

  • A comprehensive intervention combining psychological support with age-appropriate, contextualized games is most effective for managing preoperative anxiety and improving cooperation in pediatric surgical patients.
  • Tailored, preparatory games are superior to general distractions for enhancing patient experience and procedural success.
