Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Methylisothiazolinone (MI) alone is a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis, often missed by standard MCI/MI patch tests. Including MI in baseline series improves diagnosis of this specific preservative allergy.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Allergology
  • Toxicology

Background:

  • Methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/MI) has been a standard patch test allergen since the 1980s.
  • Methylisothiazolinone (MI) alone is a more recent preservative, raising concerns about detection by MCI/MI mixtures.

Observation:

  • Patients with suspected allergic contact dermatitis were patch tested with MI 2,000 ppm and MCI/MI 200 ppm.
  • A significant percentage of patients (0.8-4.2%) showed exclusive contact allergy to MI.

Findings:

  • 1.9% of patients reacted exclusively to MI, indicating MCI/MI mixtures may fail to detect MI allergy.
  • The frequency of exclusive MI allergy supports its independent diagnostic value.

Implications:

  • MI 2,000 ppm (60 μg/cm2) is now included in the Swedish baseline series for patch testing from January 2014.
  • This inclusion aims to improve the detection of allergic contact dermatitis specifically caused by MI.
