Three-dimensional Characterization of Interorganelle Contact Sites in Hepatocytes using Serial Section Electron Microscopy
Published on: June 9, 2022
Abstract:
The review of modern data about a functional purpose of membrane contact sites (MCSs) of endoplasmic reticulum is presented. Traffic problems of lipids and calcium in MCSs are discussed. The sufficient condition for giving MCSs of certain functional is not received till now; the problem of the "anchors" providing contact of two membranes, definitively is not solved. The question of ability of MCSs to realize free diffusion of any small molecules (presumably to 1.5 kDa) and ions between compartments is discussed.

Insertion of Single-pass Transmembrane Proteins in the RER
Integral transmembrane proteins possess transmembrane and extra membrane domains. The transmembrane domains are primarily made of 20-25 hydrophobic amino acids arranged in a helical secondary confirmation. These...
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
The ER provides optimal conditions for synthesizing steroid hormones and lipids, such as phospholipids and triglycerides. Traditionally, lipid metabolism was considered to be a smooth ER function. However, there is no direct evidence to prove that rough ER is completely excluded from lipid...

Golgi Apparatus
The Golgi apparatus is a eukaryotic organelle that has a distinctive ribbon-like appearance. It is a primary sorting and dispatch station for cargo arriving from the ER. Newly arriving vesicles enter the cis face of the Golgi, closest to the ER, and are...
