Plasmacytoid dendritic cells in alopecia areata: missing link?

Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (PDCs) are active in alopecia areata (AA) lesions, suggesting a key role in the disease. Their location may help distinguish AA from other hair loss conditions.

- Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (PDCs) are primary producers of type I IFNs.

- PDCs were detected in all AA cases, localized around hair follicles and actively producing type I IFNs (indicated by MxA expression).
- PDCs were present but less abundant and differently distributed in trichotillomania cases.

- Plasmacytoid dendritic cells are a significant component of the inflammatory infiltrate in alopecia areata.
- PDC presence and distribution in the peribulbar region may serve as a diagnostic marker to differentiate AA from trichotillomania and AGA.
