Assessment of Child Anthropometry in a Large Epidemiologic Study
Published on: February 2, 2017
[Overweight, obesity and underweight prevalence in 7-year-old children in the Czech Republic since 1951]
Insights
Childhood overweight and obesity stabilized in seven-year-old Czech children over the last decade, with underweight remaining low. This trend indicates a potential plateau in pediatric weight issues.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Endocrinology
- Public Health Nutrition
- Anthropometry
Background:
- Childhood overweight and obesity are increasing globally.
- Understanding long-term trends in pediatric weight status is crucial for public health interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze changes in underweight, overweight, and obesity prevalence among seven-year-old Czech children from 1951 to 2010.
- To identify trends in Body Mass Index (BMI) z-scores over this period.
Main Methods:
- Utilized data from six Czech National Anthropological Surveys (1951-2001) and the WHO Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative (COSI) in 2008 and 2010.
- Prevalence data were evaluated using WHO (2007) and Czech (1991) reference standards.
Main Results:
- Overweight and obesity prevalence generally increased in both genders from 1951 to 2001.
- A modest decrease in obesity and stable overweight was observed in girls in 2008, with slight increases in obesity and decreases in overweight in boys.
- By 2010, obesity prevalence in girls reached 2001 levels, while overweight remained stable; boys' trends mirrored 2008 findings. BMI z-scores significantly increased between 1951 and 2001.
Conclusions:
- Obesity and overweight prevalence in seven-year-old Czech children appear to have stabilized in the last decade (2001-2010).
- Underweight prevalence has consistently remained low in this population.
- These findings suggest a potential shift in the trajectory of childhood weight status in the Czech Republic.
Background:
Childhood overweight prevalence increases worldwide. The aim of the study was to clarify the change in underweight, overweight and obesity in seven year old Czech children since 1951.
Methods:
Data on underweight, overweight and obesity prevalence were obtained using repeated cross-sectional surveys. In 1951-2001 six Czech National Anthropological Surveys were conducted. In years 2008 and 2010 the data were collected as a part of the WHO Europe initiated Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative (COSI). The data were evaluated according to WHO references (2007), in 2010 results were assessed also according to the Czech reference standards (1991).
Results:
From 1951, overweight and obesity prevalence increased in both genders up to 2001. In 2008, a modest decrease in obesity and stable overweight prevalence in girls and in boys a slight increase in obesity and decrease in overweight were found. In 2010, a modest increase in obesity prevalence in girls achieving the levels assessed in 2001 and stable level of overweight were found; in boys the levels remained as in 2008. BMI z score increased significantly between 1951 and 2001.
Conclusion:
These results suggest stabilisation of obesity and overweight prevalence in the Czech Republic in 7 years old children during the last 10 years. Underweight prevalence has remained low.
