Background:

  • Patients at risk for oral and oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) frequently consult primary care providers (PCPs).
  • Many PCPs do not routinely perform oral cancer examinations (OCEs).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and evaluate a web-based educational program using a behavioral framework to encourage PCPs in conducting OCEs.
  • To assess short-term knowledge gains among PCPs after program completion.

Main Methods:

  • An integrated behavioral model guided the program design.
  • Fifteen PCPs (physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners) reviewed the program and completed posttests on risk factors (RiskOC) and diagnostic procedures (DiagOC).

Main Results:

  • Process evaluation feedback was largely positive, with suggestions for program length.
  • No significant differences in RiskOC or DiagOC scores were found among the PCP groups.
  • Optimal program length suggested to be under 40 minutes.

Conclusions:

  • A web-based educational program on OPC, grounded in a behavioral framework, can yield comparable short-term knowledge improvements for all PCPs.
  • Such programs have the potential to increase the frequency of OCEs performed by PCPs.
