Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Orthopedics

Background:

  • Acromegaly, a condition caused by excess growth hormone, can lead to skeletal abnormalities.
  • Giantism, characterized by excessive growth, is often associated with acromegaly.
  • Thoracic disc herniation is a rare spinal condition.

Observation:

  • This report details a unique case of thoracic disc herniation in a patient with acromegaly and giantism.
  • The patient exhibited degenerative spinal changes and dorsal kyphosis.

Findings:

  • The combination of degenerative changes, dorsal kyphosis, and increased spinal strain precipitated the thoracic disc prolapse.
  • This suggests a potential link between acromegaly-related skeletal changes and spinal pathologies.

Implications:

  • Understanding these associations can aid in the early diagnosis and management of spinal complications in acromegalic patients.
  • Highlights the importance of considering spinal health in individuals with endocrine disorders causing skeletal overgrowth.
