A quality improvement project trained school nurses to educate staff on seizure management. This initiative enhanced staff confidence and improved documentation for students with epilepsy in a Midwestern school district.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Neurology
- Public Health Initiatives
- Healthcare Quality Improvement
Background:
- High prevalence of epilepsy and seizures identified in a Midwestern school district.
- Need for improved seizure management education and resources for school staff.
Purpose of the Study:
- To implement and evaluate a quality improvement project focused on seizure management education in schools.
- To enhance school nurse capacity as educators and care managers for students with seizures.
Main Methods:
- Partnered with the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota (EFMN) for a quality improvement project.
- Trained 26 school nurses as seizure management educators.
- Provided seizure awareness and response training to staff in 21 schools.
Main Results:
- Majority of school nurses found resources and training "very helpful."
- Increased school nurse confidence in managing students with seizures.
- Improved seizure action plan utilization and documentation rates (88% for new diagnoses).
Conclusions:
- School nurses are crucial in improving seizure awareness and care management in educational settings.
- The project serves as a model for expanding the EFMN Seizure Smart Schools program.
- Effective training and resource implementation can significantly enhance school-based epilepsy care.
