Photoneutron dose from linear accelerators (linacs) increases secondary cancer risk. This study confirms photoneutron dose is significant and must be considered in radiation therapy planning.
Area of Science:
- Medical Physics
- Radiation Oncology
Background:
- High-energy linear accelerators (linacs) are standard for external beam radiation therapy.
- Photoneutrons generated in linac heads contribute to patient dose and secondary cancer risk.
Purpose of the Study:
- To simulate a simplified linac head model and calculate photoneutron dose equivalent.
- To estimate photoneutron absorbed and equivalent doses in phantom organs.
Main Methods:
- Monte Carlo simulations were employed for dosimetry calculations.
- The ICRP reference adult male voxel phantom served as the human body model.
Main Results:
- Photoneutron dose decreased with distance from the isocenter.
- Photoneutron dose increased with distance from the maze entrance.
Conclusions:
- A simplified linac head model is reliable for dosimetry.
- Photoneutron dose is non-negligible and requires consideration in treatment planning due to biological effects.
