A novel lignan, tadehaginosin, and a known compound were isolated from Tadehagi triquetrum. Both compounds demonstrated hypoglycemic effects by enhancing glucose consumption in liver cells.
Area of Science:
- Phytochemistry
- Pharmacology
- Natural Products Chemistry
Background:
- Tadehagi triquetrum is a plant source of bioactive compounds.
- Lignans and coumarins are classes of natural products with diverse biological activities.
- Investigating plant-derived compounds for therapeutic potential is crucial.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize novel and known compounds from Tadehagi triquetrum.
- To evaluate the hypoglycemic effects of the isolated compounds in vitro.
- To explore the potential of these natural products in managing hyperglycemia.
Main Methods:
- Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
- Structure elucidation utilizing advanced spectroscopic methods (NMR, MS).
- In vitro assessment of hypoglycemic activity using HepG2 cells to measure glucose uptake.
Main Results:
- A new lignan, tadehaginosin, was successfully isolated and structurally identified.
- A known coumarin derivative, 3,4-dihydro-4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-5,7-dihydroxycoumarin, was also isolated.
- Both isolated compounds significantly increased glucose consumption by HepG2 cells, indicating hypoglycemic potential.
Conclusions:
- Tadehagi triquetrum yields structurally interesting lignan and coumarin compounds.
- Tadehaginosin and the known coumarin exhibit promising in vitro hypoglycemic activity.
- These findings support the ethnobotanical use of Tadehagi triquetrum and warrant further investigation for diabetes treatment.
