Early Ischemia and Ionic ImbalanceWithin minutes of spinal cord injury, a secondary cascade begins, progressing over hours to weeks. Summary

Post-operative visual loss is a rare complication following anesthesia and surgery, especially spinal procedures. This case highlights a devastating instance of complete vision loss in a patient after complex spinal surgery.

Background:

Post-operative visual loss (POVL) is a rare but severe complication.
It is frequently associated with long surgeries, particularly spinal and cardiac procedures.
Risk factors are poorly understood and often unsupported.

Observation:

This case report details a 61-year-old male patient.
The patient experienced complete, painless vision loss post-complicated spinal surgery.
Initial examination revealed unreactive pupils and normal fundoscopy.

Findings:

The patient suffered profound bilateral vision loss.
No effective treatment is currently documented for this condition.
Prognosis for recovery is extremely poor.

Implications:

This case underscores the devastating impact of POVL.
Further research into risk factors and potential treatments is crucial.
Enhanced vigilance and preventative strategies are needed for high-risk surgical patients.
