Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Urology
  • Rheumatology

Background:

  • Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a systemic vasculitis.
  • Ureteral strictures are an uncommon manifestation of PAN.
  • Retroperitoneal fibrosis is a known cause of ureteral obstruction in PAN.

Observation:

  • This report details a rare case of bilateral, asynchronous ureteral strictures.
  • The strictures were attributed to polyarteritis nodosa.
  • No associated retroperitoneal fibrosis was observed.

Findings:

  • Bilateral, asynchronous ureteral strictures due to PAN are exceptionally rare.
  • Ureteral obstruction in PAN typically occurs with retroperitoneal fibrosis, making this case atypical.
  • This presentation highlights the diverse renal and ureteral manifestations of PAN.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case expands the known spectrum of ureteral involvement in polyarteritis nodosa.
  • Highlights the importance of considering PAN in the differential diagnosis of unexplained ureteral strictures.
  • Suggests that ureteral strictures can occur in PAN even in the absence of retroperitoneal fibrosis.
