Background:

  • Phonological decoding is considered vital for sight word learning (orthographic learning).
  • Limited understanding exists regarding sight word acquisition in children with phonological dyslexia (impaired phonological decoding).
  • The reasons for impaired sight word acquisition in children with surface dyslexia, despite normal phonological decoding, remain unclear.

Observation:

  • This study examined orthographic learning in two 10-year-old children: one with surface dyslexia (S.D.) and one with phonological dyslexia (P.D.).
  • Two experiments investigated the roles of phonological decoding and paired-associate learning in orthographic learning.
  • P.D. demonstrated superior orthographic learning compared to S.D., despite P.D.'s weaker phonological decoding skills.

Findings:

  • Orthographic learning ability is not solely dependent on phonological decoding skill.
  • Children with surface dyslexia (S.D.) exhibited deficits in paired-associate learning.
  • Children with phonological dyslexia (P.D.) did not show impairments in paired-associate learning.

Implications:

  • Phonological decoding ability does not directly predict orthographic learning capacity.
  • Paired-associate learning ability may be a significant factor in successful orthographic learning.
  • These findings suggest distinct pathways for reading acquisition and potential intervention targets for dyslexia.
