Individuals with bladder exstrophy and epispadias complex show good sexual function outcomes. However, they may initiate sexual activity later and have fewer children than controls.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Reproductive Medicine
- Congenital Malformations
Background:
- Bladder exstrophy and epispadias complex (BEEC) is a rare congenital condition.
- BEEC can significantly impact patients' sexual function and quality of life.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the long-term sexual function of patients with BEEC.
- To compare sexual function in BEEC patients with age-matched controls.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective identification of 63 BEEC patients treated between 1956-1992.
- Validated questionnaires (IIEF-15 for men, FSFI for women) and auxiliary questions were mailed.
- 32 patients (51% response rate) completed the questionnaires.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in erectile function (IIEF-15) between male BEEC patients and controls.
- Female BEEC patients reported higher overall sexual function scores (FSFI) than controls.
- BEEC patients were less likely to be sexually active and have children compared to controls.
Conclusions:
- Men and women with BEEC demonstrate favorable long-term sexual function.
- BEEC patients may experience delayed sexual initiation and reduced fertility.
- Further support and counseling may be beneficial for BEEC patients regarding sexual health and family planning.

In males, the urethra is longer and passes through the penis, serving dual purposes: expelling urine and ejaculating semen. The male...
