Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between anxiety status and LTL.
  • To assess LTL as an indicator of cellular ageing in anxiety disorders.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study using data from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety.
  • Participants included individuals with current anxiety disorder (n=1283), remitted anxiety disorder (n=459), and controls (n=582).
  • Anxiety diagnoses, clinical characteristics, and LTL (measured by qPCR) were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Individuals with current anxiety disorder exhibited significantly shorter LTL compared to controls and those with remitted anxiety.
  • No significant difference in LTL was observed between the remitted anxiety group and controls.
  • Anxiety severity showed a dose-response association with shorter LTL.

Conclusions:

  • Current anxiety disorder is associated with accelerated cellular ageing, evidenced by shorter LTL.
  • This cellular ageing process may be partially reversible upon remission of anxiety.
  • LTL may serve as a potential biomarker for the somatic consequences of anxiety disorders.
