In Vitro Fertilization01:24

In Vitro Fertilization

1.5K
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a form of assisted reproductive technology where an egg is fertilized with sperm in a controlled laboratory environment before transferring the resulting embryo into the uterus. This process is designed to help individuals and couples experiencing difficulties conceiving.
The IVF process begins with ovarian stimulation, during which reproductive endocrinologists prescribe hormonal medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs instead of the single...

Infertility in Males

712
Male infertility affects millions of couples worldwide, arising from various factors that impact different stages of the reproductive process. An endocrine imbalance resulting from conditions like hypogonadism, Klinefelter syndrome, or pituitary disorders can disrupt hormone levels and reduce sperm production. Testicular defects, such as tumors, cryptorchidism, atrophic testes, abnormal sperm morphology, and low sperm count or motility, may arise due to genetic factors, structural...

Cloning of Dolly the Sheep

9.5K
The first successfully cloned mammal was Dolly, a sheep, born on 5th July 1996 at Roslin Institute, Scotland. The cloned sheep was named after the American singer Dolly Parton. Dolly lived for seven years and died of respiratory complications, which is speculated to be due to the actual age of her DNA. Because the DNA in cloned cells belongs to an older individual,  the cloned individual’s life expectancy may be affected. Indeed, analysis of Dolly’s DNA revealed shorter...

Infertility in Females01:28

Infertility in Females

5.1K
Female infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after a year of regular, unprotected intercourse and affects about 10–15% of couples worldwide. The primary cause of female infertility is ovulatory disorders, which hinder the release of eggs. These disorders can be classified as hypothalamic amenorrhea, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), premature ovarian failure, and hyperprolactinemic anovulation disorders.
Endometriosis, a condition characterized by abnormal growth of...

Reproductive Cloning01:27

Reproductive Cloning

33.4K
Reproductive cloning is the process of producing a genetically identical copy—a clone—of an entire organism. While clones can be produced by splitting an early embryo—similar to what happens naturally with identical twins—cloning of adult animals is usually done by a process called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT).
Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer
In SCNT, an egg cell is taken from an animal and its nucleus is removed, creating an enucleated egg. Then a somatic...

Summary

Assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) are permissible in Sunni Islam if confined to married couples. Surrogacy and third-party donors are forbidden, but gender selection for medical or limited social reasons is allowed.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Islamic Bioethics
  • Medical Ethics

Background:

  • Infertility is a significant challenge in Islam, with efforts to overcome it being encouraged.
  • Advances in assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) have raised ethical questions within Islamic jurisprudence.
  • This review focuses on the Sunni perspective regarding ARTs and infertility treatments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To elucidate the Sunni Islamic perspective on various assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs).
  • To provide clarity on the permissibility of infertility treatments within Islamic doctrine for those unfamiliar with it.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of relevant literature.
  • Searches conducted on Medline databases (1978-2013) using keywords related to assisted reproduction, infertility, gender selection, ethics, bioethics, and Islam.

Main Results:

  • All ARTs are permitted in Islamic Sunni law when gametes and uterus originate from a legally married couple.
  • Surrogacy and the use of third-party donors (sperm, ovum, embryo, or uterus) are strictly forbidden.
  • Frozen preimplantation embryos can be transferred to the wife in subsequent cycles, provided the marriage remains valid. Gender selection is permissible for medical reasons and, with limitations, for social reasons.

Conclusions:

  • Assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) are acceptable and encouraged within Islamic Sunni law when practiced exclusively within the marital union.
  • Interference by third parties in the procreation process is prohibited.
  • Surrogacy is universally rejected by Sunni Islamic authorities.
