Summary
The auditory cortex influences hearing by modulating the olivocochlear (OC) reflex and cochlear sensitivity. Electrical stimulation revealed independent effects on OC reflex strength and peripheral auditory responses.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Auditory Neuroscience
- Sensory Systems
Background:
- Efferent projections to the cochlea, the olivocochlear (OC) system, originate in the superior olivary complex.
- Descending pathways from the auditory cortex also project to auditory brainstem structures.
- The influence of the auditory cortex on the OC reflex is not well understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the modulatory effects of the auditory cortex on cochlear and auditory nerve responses.
- To determine if cortical descending pathways influence the olivocochlear reflex strength.
- To examine the relationship between cortical modulation of cochlear sensitivity and OC reflex strength.
Main Methods:
- Electrical microstimulation of the auditory cortex in chinchillas.
- Measurement of cochlear microphonics and auditory nerve compound action potentials.
- Assessment of olivocochlear reflex strength using auditory nerve responses.
Main Results:
- Auditory cortex stimulation caused amplitude modulation of cochlear microphonics and auditory nerve potentials, indicating changes in cochlear sensitivity.
- Cortical stimulation also altered olivocochlear reflex strength, either enhancing or suppressing it, with intersubject variability observed.
- The effects on cochlear sensitivity and OC reflex strength were independent and not correlated.
Conclusions:
- The auditory cortex exerts independent modulatory control over both cochlear sensitivity and olivocochlear reflex strength.
- These findings suggest the existence of at least two distinct corticofugal pathways influencing peripheral auditory processing.
- This study reveals a novel mechanism by which the auditory cortex actively shapes auditory input to the cochlea.

The Cochlea
52.8K
The cochlea is a coiled structure in the inner ear that contains hair cells—the sensory receptors of the auditory system. Sound waves are transmitted to the cochlea by small bones attached to the eardrum called the ossicles, which vibrate the oval window that leads to the inner ear. This causes fluid in the chambers of the cochlea to move, vibrating the basilar membrane.

Auditory Pathway
9.2K
Auditory pathways constitute the complex neural circuits responsible for transmitting and interpreting auditory information from the peripheral auditory system to the brain. Sound waves are initially captured by the outer ear, funneled through the ear canal, and reach the tympanic membrane (eardrum). These vibrations are transmitted via the middle ear's ossicles to the inner ear's cochlea.

Hair Cells
46.9K
Hair cells are the sensory receptors of the auditory system—they transduce mechanical sound waves into electrical energy that the nervous system can understand. Hair cells are located in the organ of Corti within the cochlea of the inner ear, between the basilar and tectorial membranes. The actual sensory receptors are called inner hair cells. The outer hair cells serve other functions, such as sound amplification in the cochlea, and are not discussed in detail here.
