    Summary

    This study identified common bacteria in gallbladders of patients with calculus cholecystitis. Imipenem and Piperacillin-Tazobactum are recommended for prophylactic antibiotic therapy to prevent post-cholecystectomy infections.

    Background:

    • Calculus cholecystitis is a common biliary tract disease.
    • Identifying infected gallbladders pre-cholecystectomy is challenging.
    • Infected gallbladders pose risks of wound infection and gram-negative septicaemia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine bacteriological patterns in calculus cholecystitis patients.
    • To assess antibiotic sensitivities of bile isolates.
    • To establish guidelines for prophylactic antibiotic use.

    Main Methods:

    • Descriptive study of 150 patients undergoing elective cholecystectomy.
    • Bile aspiration and bacteriological examination of intact gallbladders.
    • Data collection on bacterial isolates and antibiotic sensitivities.

    Main Results:

    • Bacterial growth observed in 38% of cases.
    • Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae were the most common isolates.
    • Imipenem, Piperacillin-Tazobactum, and Amikacin showed the highest efficacy.

    Conclusions:

    • Imipenem, Piperacillin-Tazobactum, and Amikacin are recommended for prophylaxis.
    • These antibiotics should be considered for patients with cholelithiasis undergoing elective cholecystectomy.
    • Guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis can be formulated based on these findings.
