Summary

Ectopic thymic tissue in the neck, though rare, can be misdiagnosed as other cervical masses. This case highlights the importance of considering thymic cysts in the differential diagnosis of lateral neck masses.

Background:

Ectopic thymic tissue in the neck is an uncommon finding, often overlooked in the diagnosis of cervical cystic lesions.
These rare entities are frequently misdiagnosed as more common conditions such as branchial cleft cysts, lymphatic malformations, or neoplastic masses.

Observation:

A case report details a 15-year-old male presenting with a lateral neck mass on the left side.
The mass was initially suspected to be a typical cervical cyst but was found to be ectopic thymic tissue.

Findings:

Histopathological examination of the excised cyst confirmed the presence of thymic tissue.
Microscopic features included prominent Hassall's corpuscles, cholesterol clefts, lymphoid aggregates, and a cyst lining of cuboidal and squamous cells.

Implications:

Cervical thymic cysts, despite their rarity, must be included in the differential diagnosis for lateral neck masses in pediatric patients.
Accurate diagnosis is crucial to avoid misdiagnosis and ensure appropriate surgical and medical management.
