Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. Background:

Trait sexual motivation is a long-term psychological construct influenced by biological and sociocultural factors.
It shares conceptual similarities with sexual desire, drive, needs, and compulsivity.
Existing measures may not fully capture the multifaceted nature of trait sexual motivation.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate the Trait Sexual Motivation Questionnaire (TSMQ).
To assess the psychometric properties of the TSMQ, including its factor structure, construct validity, and temporal stability.
To provide a reliable instrument for measuring trait sexual motivation.

Main Methods:

Item generation focused on sexual desire, effort for sexual activity, and specific sexual behaviors.
Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) on a sample of 256 participants.
Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on a separate sample of 498 participants to verify the factor structure and assess construct validity.
Test-retest reliability assessed over one year in a third study with 59 participants.

Main Results:

EFA and CFA identified four subscales: Solitary Sexuality, Importance of Sex, Seeking Sexual Encounters, and Comparison with Others.
The TSMQ demonstrated high test quality and construct validity.
Excellent temporal stability was confirmed, with a 1-year retest reliability of r=0.87.

Conclusions:

The TSMQ is a psychometrically sound instrument for measuring trait sexual motivation.
The questionnaire exhibits high test quality and construct validity.
Future research could differentiate between trait and state sexual motivation for clinical and forensic applications.
