We introduce the FRIEND Engine Framework, a new, standalone neurofeedback tool for real-time fMRI and fMRI/EEG studies. This flexible, open-source framework facilitates custom neurofeedback research and development.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Computer Science

Background:

  • Neurofeedback research requires adaptable tools for real-time brain data analysis.
  • Existing neurofeedback systems may lack flexibility for diverse experimental designs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a new, standalone implementation of the FRIEND neurofeedback tool, termed the FRIEND Engine Framework.
  • To provide a flexible, cross-platform solution for real-time fMRI and fMRI/EEG neurofeedback studies.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a client-server, cross-platform framework for real-time fMRI and fMRI/EEG neurofeedback.
  • Enabled flexible customization of graphical interfaces, devices, and data processing.
  • Facilitated rapid setup and sharing of novel plug-ins and frontends.
