Area of Science:

  • Sports Medicine
  • Public Health
  • Secondary School Athletics

Background:

  • Previous studies indicated limited athletic training (AT) services in secondary schools (42%).
  • These prior findings were based on older data and small sample sizes.
  • Current AT service availability in public secondary schools requires updated investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the current availability and accessibility of athletic training (AT) services in public secondary schools nationwide.
  • To provide updated statistics on AT service provision in US secondary schools.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study design was employed.
  • Surveys were distributed to public secondary schools across all 50 US states and Washington, DC.
  • Data from 8509 responding schools (57% response rate) were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • 70% of surveyed schools reported having athletic training (AT) services.
  • Full-time AT services were available in 37% of schools, with part-time and per diem services also reported.
  • 48% of schools provided AT coverage for all sports practices, and 86% of athletes had access to AT services.

Conclusions:

  • Access to athletic training (AT) services in public secondary schools has significantly improved since previous national surveys.
  • While 70% of schools now offer AT, only approximately one-third provide full-time athletic trainers.
  • Further increases in full-time athletic trainer positions are necessary to ensure adequate medical coverage for secondary school athletes.
