Area of Science:

  • Assistive technology
  • Rehabilitation engineering
  • Pediatric neurology

Background:

  • Severe impairments can limit participation in essential mobility training.
  • Power mobility training is crucial for independence and environmental interaction.
  • Novel assistive devices are needed to facilitate skill acquisition in individuals with complex needs.

Observation:

  • An 18-year-old female with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy (Gross Motor Function Classification Level V) participated.
  • A Power Wheelchair Trainer (Trainer) with headrest-controlled switches was utilized.
  • Intervention involved targeted power mobility skill practice in a simulated environment.

Findings:

  • The participant demonstrated improved scores on the Power Mobility Screen post-intervention.
  • Caregiver-reported outcomes, measured by the CPCHILD, also showed improvement.
  • The Trainer enabled effective engagement with power mobility training.

Implications:

  • The Power Wheelchair Trainer (Trainer) shows promise as an effective tool for power mobility training.
  • This intervention can enhance participation and independence for individuals with severe physical disabilities.
  • Further research into similar assistive technologies is warranted to support functional independence.
