Serum survivin increases in prolactinoma

Background:

• Prolactinoma, the most common adult pituitary adenoma, is associated with elevated prolactin levels.
• Survivin, an inhibitor of apoptosis protein, is expressed in various tumors.
• Previous studies indicated survivin expression in prolactinoma tissue, but serum levels remained uninvestigated.

Purpose of the Study:

• To investigate serum survivin levels in patients diagnosed with prolactinoma.
• To assess the potential diagnostic value of serum survivin in prolactinoma.

Main Methods:

• Serum survivin levels were measured in 25 women with prolactinoma (20 microprolactinoma, 5 macroprolactinoma) and 21 healthy women.
• All prolactinoma patients were undergoing dopamine agonist treatment.
• Levels were compared between patients and controls, and between micro- and macroadenoma subgroups.

Main Results:

• Serum survivin levels were significantly higher in prolactinoma patients compared to healthy controls (P = 0.042).
• No significant difference in survivin levels was observed between patients with microadenoma and macroadenoma (P = 0.914).
• Survivin levels did not correlate with other clinical parameters.

Conclusions:

• Elevated serum survivin may serve as a potential molecular marker for prolactinoma diagnosis.
