Osteoid osteoma treated with radiofrequency ablation

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

• To evaluate the efficacy and safety of CT-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for osteoid osteomas in surgically challenging locations.
• To assess pain relief and functional recovery in patients treated with RFA.

Main Methods:

• A cohort of 13 patients (9 males, 4 females; age 4-34 years) with osteoid osteomas in difficult sites underwent CT-guided RFA under local anesthesia.
• Lesions were ablated at 90°C for 6 minutes.
• Pre- and post-procedure evaluations included imaging (X-ray, CT, bone scintigraphy, MRI) and pain assessment.

Main Results:

• All 13 patients achieved complete pain relief post-RFA and regained full weight-bearing ability.
• Post-procedure soft tissue edema was observed in all patients, resolving without intervention.
• No tumor recurrence or other complications were noted during follow-up.

Conclusions:

• CT-guided percutaneous RFA is a safe, minimally invasive, and effective treatment for osteoid osteomas, particularly those in difficult-to-access surgical sites.
• RFA provides excellent pain control and functional recovery with a low complication rate.
