Symbiosis00:58

Symbiosis

38.8K
Symbiotic relationships are long-term, close interactions between individuals of different species that affect the distribution and abundance of those species. When a relationship is beneficial to both species, this is called mutualism. When the relationship is beneficial to one species but neither beneficial nor harmful to the other species, this is called commensalism. When one organism is harmed to benefit another, the relationship is known as parasitism. These types of relationships often...

Sustainable Development

15.5K
As the human population continues to grow and use resources, we must be mindful of our planet’s natural limits. Sustainable development provides a pathway to maintain and improve human life now while also ensuring that future generations will have the resources that they need. The long-term success of sustainability efforts rests on understanding the interplay between human actions and ecological systems.

Hardy-Weinberg Principle01:49

Hardy-Weinberg Principle

77.8K
Diploid organisms have two alleles of each gene, one from each parent, in their somatic cells. Therefore, each individual contributes two alleles to the gene pool of the population. The gene pool of a population is the sum of every allele of all genes within that population and has some degree of variation. Genetic variation is typically expressed as a relative frequency, which is the percentage of the total population that has a given allele, genotype or phenotype.

Altruism01:03

Altruism

49.9K
Altruistic behaviors are “unselfish” behaviors—those that help another individual at the expense of the individual carrying out the behavior. Despite the negative consequences for the altruistic animal, these behaviors are thought to have evolved for several reasons.

Imprinting01:22

Imprinting

11.7K
Behavioral imprinting is observed in some newborn animals and occurs when they develop strong and specific attachments to another animal (usually a parent) following brief, early-life exposures. Offspring imprint onto parents within a brief period after birth or hatching; this time window is called the critical period. Once imprinting occurs, the bond established between the parents and their offspring is usually long-lasting.

Area of Science:

  • Scientific Publication Ethics
  • Research Integrity

Background:

  • Multidisciplinary research teams are common in modern science.
  • Authorship allocation is a sensitive issue impacting scientists' careers and research collaboration.
  • Inadequate discussion and education on ethical authorship standards contribute to unresolved disputes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To outline inappropriate authorship practices and recent developments in fair authorship allocation.
  • To highlight the importance of ethical guidelines in scientific publications.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of relevant literature, internet sources, and personal observations.
  • Review of materials and documents concerning scientific authorship.

Main Results:

  • Authorship disputes can jeopardize research projects and collaborations.
  • Current practices and education on fair authorship allocation are insufficient.
  • The issue of ethical authorship in multi-authored publications remains largely unresolved.

Conclusions:

  • Raising awareness and providing education on scientific communication and authorship ethics are essential.
  • Targeted education for young researchers and students can foster an ethical research environment.
  • Effective education is key to preventing scientific dishonesty and publication fraud, including authorship pathology.
