Summary

Young horses did not demonstrate social learning of a spatial detour task through observation. Despite initial promising results, further trials confirmed observers performed similarly to control groups, indicating no learning benefit from watching conspecifics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if young Icelandic horses can acquire a spatial detour task via social learning.
  • To determine if learning is influenced by the age and dominance of the demonstrator horse.

  • Observer horses watched trained demonstrator horses navigate a spatial detour task.
  • Control horses observed demonstrators only at the task's end, without route demonstration.
