    Summary

Electrostatic charges, not electromagnetic fields, are identified as the primary cause of semicircular lipoatrophy (SL). Modifying the electrostatic environment led to symptom improvement in affected individuals.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Occupational Health
    • Environmental Science

    Background:

    • Semicircular lipoatrophy (SL) is a benign condition marked by the localized loss of subcutaneous adipose tissue.
    • Understanding the etiology of SL is crucial for effective management and prevention.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential causes of semicircular lipoatrophy.
    • To differentiate between electromagnetic and electrostatic influences on SL development.

    Main Methods:

    • Conducted a study involving 42 patients diagnosed with SL.
    • Performed technical assessments of the work environment, including electromagnetic field and electrostatic charge measurements.
    • Carried out clinical examinations and laboratory tests on affected patients.

    Main Results:

    • No anomalous electromagnetic signals beyond typical wireless communication were detected.
    • Significant positive electrostatic charges were measured on surfaces and in the environment, dissipating upon skin contact.
    • Clinical and ultrasound skin tests revealed specific findings related to the patients' conditions.

    Conclusions:

    • Electrostatic charges, rather than electromagnetic fields, are implicated as the main causative factor in semicircular lipoatrophy.
    • Environmental modifications to control electrostatic charges resulted in the improvement of SL symptoms.
    • Occupational behaviors and the electrostatic environment are key considerations for SL etiology.
