  • To provide recommendations for app developers to improve BD app utility.

  • A systematic search was conducted across major app stores (Google Play, Apple App Store, Blackberry App World, Windows Mobile App Store).
  • 169 free blood donation apps were selected from 188 identified apps for analysis.
  • Characteristics including installation success, authentication, language, geographical restrictions, event notifications, laboratory connectivity, social sharing, and recommendations were evaluated.

Main Results:

  • The majority of analyzed apps were developed for Android.
  • Most apps facilitated donor searches, but few could be installed or accessed.
  • Key limitations included lack of authentication, limited multilingual support, geographical restrictions, infrequent event notifications, and minimal social sharing or BD recommendations.

Conclusions:

  • Current free blood donation apps exhibit significant limitations in features and functionality.
  • There is a clear need for enhanced BD apps with more comprehensive features to effectively increase volunteer donor engagement.
  • Recommendations are provided for developers to create more effective and user-friendly blood donation applications.
