Summary

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) applied to the right posterior parietal cortex (rPPC) induced neglect-like symptoms in near space. This neglect extended to far space when a tool was used, suggesting tool use can remap space representation.

Background:

  • Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can induce neglect-like behavior by interfering with the right posterior parietal cortex (rPPC).
  • Tool use has been shown to modulate spatial representations, potentially remapping far space as near space when a tool extends reach.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if rTMS-induced neglect in near space extends to far space when tool use is involved.
  • To determine if tool use can cause neglect in far space after rTMS on the rPPC.

Main Methods:

  • Fifteen healthy subjects performed a line length judgment task in near (60 cm) and far (120 cm) space.
  • On-line rTMS was applied to the rPPC during tasks, with and without tool use in the far space condition.

Main Results:

  • rTMS over the rPPC caused a significant rightward shift in visuospatial performance in near space.
  • This neglect-like effect was also observed in far space when subjects used a tool, but not without a tool.

Conclusions:

  • rTMS on the rPPC selectively affects near space representation.
  • Tool use can remap far space to be perceived as near space, making it susceptible to neglect induced by rTMS on the rPPC.
