For medical and dental students in North India, lectures combining English and Hindi with chalk and board (C&B) teaching aids improved performance. This approach enhanced student attentiveness and note-taking compared to other methods.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Educational Technology
Background:
- Northern Indian medical/dental colleges serve diverse student populations with varying English proficiency and learning needs.
- Conventional lecture strategies may not optimally cater to this diverse student body.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify the most effective lecture strategies and teaching aids for North Indian medical and dental students.
- To assess student preferences for language of instruction and teaching methodologies.
Main Methods:
- A survey of 33 faculty and 506 students was conducted to gauge preferences.
- Four groups of students received lectures using different teaching aids: chalk and board (C&B), PowerPoint (PPT), overhead projector (OHP), and a combination of C&B and PPT.
- Lecture strategy incorporated student preferences for language (English/Hindi mix) and breaks.
Main Results:
- While most students reported English proficiency, 83.6% preferred a Hindi-English mix.
- Chalk and board (C&B) was preferred by 44.3% of students, followed by PPT (40.1%).
- Significantly better performance in post-lecture tests was observed when C&B was used, with higher student attentiveness and note-taking.
Conclusions:
- Teaching strategies in India must consider unique student needs, differing from Western contexts.
- The chalk and board (C&B) teaching aid appears most effective for improving North Indian medical and dental students' understanding and engagement in didactic lectures.
