    Summary

Pegylated-interferon (PEG-IFN) monotherapy effectively eradicates Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) in patients with rapid viral response, reducing side effects. Low-dose interferon may inhibit liver cancer development, but benefits and risks require careful evaluation.

    Area of Science:

    • Hepatology
    • Virology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Chronic hepatitis C (HCV) infection poses risks for liver disease and cancer.
    • Pegylated-interferon (PEG-IFN) and interferon therapies have been used for HCV treatment.
    • These therapies aim for viral eradication and prevention of liver cancer (hepatocarcinogenesis).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of PEG-IFN monotherapy for HCV eradication.
    • To assess the potential of low-dose interferon in inhibiting hepatocarcinogenesis.
    • To analyze the benefits and adverse events associated with interferon therapy.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of patients receiving PEG-IFN monotherapy.
    • Assessment of viral response and eradication rates.

  • Monitoring of liver function markers (ALT) and tumor markers (AFP) for cancer inhibition.
  • Main Results:

    • PEG-IFN monotherapy demonstrated efficient HCV eradication in patients with rapid viral response.
    • Reduced side effects were observed in patients achieving rapid viral response.
    • Low-dose interferon showed potential for inhibiting hepatocarcinogenesis in select patients with reduced ALT or AFP.

    Conclusions:

    • PEG-IFN monotherapy is effective for HCV eradication with favorable outcomes in rapid responders.
    • Low-dose interferon may offer a strategy for hepatocarcinogenesis inhibition, warranting further investigation.
    • Careful consideration of benefits versus adverse events is crucial for interferon therapy decisions.
